Translating LimeSurvey 2

This document shows how to localize LimeSurvey 2. Instructions for earlier version of LimeSurvey can be found here.

How to translate - Step-by-Step instructions

Updating an existing language file
  1. First of all get access to the development version of LimeSurvey 2. You can find detailed instructions how to get your hands on it on this page: Accessing the source code
  2. Download and install poEDIT (external link). It is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
  3. Find the default.po file for your language in /app/locale/<your_language_iso_code>/LC_MESSAGES/ .
  4. Open the default.po file with poEdit.
  5. In poEdit do the following once:
    1. Open menu Catalog/Settings, enter the Paths-Tab
    2. Delete the existing path and add a new one pointing to the downloaded LimeSurvey 2 sources, specifically to the /app/ dir (this is important!)
    3. Click on the Keywords tab, click on 'New' item icon (yellow sparkle).
    4. Add the keyword: "__" (two underscores)
    5. Click 'OK' to close & save the settings.
    6. Open Menu File/Preferences, enter the ParsersTab.
    7. Choose 'PHP' in the listbox and click on Edit.
    8. Add *.ctp to the list of extensions so it reads
      *.php;*.ctp
    9. Add --language=PHP to the Parser Command, so it reads
      xgettext language=PHP force-po -o %o %C %K %F
    10. Click 'OK' to save and again 'OK' to close the preferences.
    11. Open the menu entry Catalog/Update from Sources
    12. If you did everything right it should now find all untranslated strings and add it to the .po file
  6. Now edit the file. Every time you save the file not only the po.file will be saved , but also the .mo file will be saved. The .mo file is the compiled file that LimeSurvey 2 is using and reading from.
  7. Translate everything you need to translate. The yellowish marked items are 'unclear' translations and you should check/correct these first. Remember that it is better to have no translation than a wrong one!
  8. Save and you are done.
  9. Send the updated .po-File to carsten.schmitz@limesurvey.org and tell him it is for LimeSurvey 2 !

LimeSurvey 2 is partially caching the translations.

So if you have problems to get your newly translated strings to work please check the /app/tmp/cache directories and remove the files inside (not the directories).

  • + : A leading plus sign indicates that this word must be present in every object returned.
  • - : A leading minus sign indicates that this word must not be present in any row returned.
  • By default (when neither plus nor minus is specified) the word is optional, but the object that contain it will be rated higher.
  • < > : These two operators are used to change a word's contribution to the relevance value that is assigned to a row.
  • ( ) : Parentheses are used to group words into subexpressions.
  • ~ : A leading tilde acts as a negation operator, causing the word's contribution to the object relevance to be negative. It's useful for marking noise words. An object that contains such a word will be rated lower than others, but will not be excluded altogether, as it would be with the - operator.
  • * : An asterisk is the truncation operator. Unlike the other operators, it should be appended to the word, not prepended.
  • " : The phrase, that is enclosed in double quotes ", matches only objects that contain this phrase literally, as it was typed.
